Student Characteristics


Sometimes, if you are considering Timber Ridge School, it helps to look at some of the characteristics which have been used to describe our students. These characteristics are often used to describe our students:


• inappropriate behavior
• acting-out behavior
• withdrawn
• depressed
• manic behavior
• passive
• short attention span
• hyperactive
• low frustration level
• distractible
• uninhibited
• truant
• incorrigible
• delinquent
• involved with drugs
• authority conflicts
• poor peer relationships
• poor family relationships

These characteristics about performance in school are also found in students considered appropriate candidates for the program at Timber Ridge School.

• perceptual difficulties
• uncontrollable
• inability to learn with normal teaching techniques
• perseveration
• poor language ability
• potential not reflected by academic achievement


The following characteristics don't mean that we will not accept a student. However, they are uncommon in students considered appropriate candidates for the program at Timber Ridge School.


• confirmed history of arson
• actively suicidal
• extreme aggression, such as use of weapons against others
• emotionally disturbed to the degree that heavy medication is considered essential to control behavior
• chemically drug dependent


Admission is open to boys between the ages of 11 and 17, inclusive, at admission. Students may remain in the program until their 22nd birthday. The identified primary handicaps of our students include emotional disturbance; social maladjustment; or behavior disorders. Admission is open only to youth we think we can help with positive behavioral change and adjustment within the program offered.
