Stabilization Services Program

Recognizing the growing need for intense stabilization services for the youth in our surrounding area, Timber Ridge School will provide this service for these localities:

City of Winchester, Clarke County, Fauquier County, Frederick County, VA, Loudoun County, Page County, Shenandoah County, and Warren County.

Morgan County, Berkeley County, Jefferson County, and Hampshire County, West Virginia.

Specifically our current stabilization service, geared toward preparing our students for long-term treatment at our facility, will be available to prepare students for “step down” treatment.

Treatment Focus: Our current developmental Levels System focuses on the following goals at the first three levels.

• Level 1 – Adjustment: Focuses on the student’s understanding and accepting his placement, while learning the rules and expectations of campus life.
• Level 2 – Personal Compliance: At this level the student begins to accept that others have the right to tell him what to do. He begins to show his control over himself by following rules. By the end of Level 2, the student can complete the daily life routine without constant reminders and controls by staff. Responsible behavior becomes a habit.
• Level 3 – Setting Goals: At this level the student learns that it is not enough for him to stop his negative behavior and comply with rules. He must determine a positive direction to which he will commit himself.

The goals for the student placed at Timber Ridge School for stabilization and reintegration are:
• Helping the student identify and define community norms.
• Establishing clear expectations and rules within the home environment.
• Establishing the necessary support systems within the community.
• Working intensely with the student and adult/family to which he will be discharged.

Cost: The cost of the service is the established stabilization fee on our rate sheet for the fiscal year when services are provided.
Additional services are available at established rates. The additional services may include:
• additional counseling; individual and group
• additional family counseling
• transition services, i.e. transportation, meetings with school personnel, etc.
• diagnostic assessment

Time Frame: It is estimated that a stabilization period of 3 to 6 months is required to work through Levels 1 and 2 and substantially through Level 3.

Reporting Of Progress: Monthly progress reports detailing the student’s progress will be developed and forwarded to responsible parties.

Collaboration: Monthly meetings in person or via conference call will be coordinated with student and responsible parties to review progress.

Counseling: Weekly counseling is provided to focus on the individual emotional and psychological needs presented by the student.
Weekly group counseling is provided and offers a collective, supportive group of students facing similar stressors associated with out of home placements and reintegration back to their community.
Family counseling is provided on a biweekly basis. This is intended to provide specific direction and support to post discharge family/ placement.

Transition: Upon completion of Level 2 and initiation of Level 3, the student will be regularly involved in supported, transitional activities.

Academic Service: Academic services will be provided which include:
• Educational assessment
• Remedial instruction
• Grade level instruction

Admission Criteria: In general, the admission criteria and procedure remains consistent with current Timber Ridge School practice.
The potential for successfully completing the stabilization services in preparation for a “step down” of services is based on the severity of disturbance in social, emotional or behavioral functioning. The intensity, duration and chronicity of the disturbance are significant factors in determining appropriateness for the service.
The identification of a post-discharge placement is essential in preparing for transitional services.
