Responsibility Training

In conjunction with other schools throughout the United States, Timber Ridge School teaches the Responsibility Training Curriculum as developed by Dr. William Glasser. The model is easily understood information about behavior and behavior choices. It emphasizes understanding how and why we make choices. It also teaches strategies for making good choices.

Community Service. All students at Timber Ridge School are required to participate in service to our community. The program teaches and students experience not only the responsibility of giving to others, but the joy that giving brings. Students are involved in groups. Also, as part of the transitional program, students are involved in individual activities which provide community service.

The lessons learned by giving to others is critical in character development. The projects will be different each year, and have included such things as visits to senior citizens, playground cleaning at a day care center, washing cars for the Sheriff's Department, caring for an abandoned cemetery, installing an irrigation system, going fishing with disabled adults, growing vegetables to donate to the Salvation Army, and many others. We have had the consistent experience that our students have gained more from these activities than they have given.

Student Government. We believe that nothing demonstrates changes in a student's character more than his ability and willingness to help his peers. We offer our students opportunities to lead, to make decisions, and to help others through a representative Student Council. Representatives are elected by the students and provide leadership in many areas of student life. The responsibilities of discussing issues, representing viewpoints, and making decisions for the benefit of others strengthen leadership and build character.
